Statement

Kyoto Republic is changing its shape. It will be soon driven by blog. Hopefully more action in future!

Releases will be added here soon. Here's our statement:

The act of writing and publishing a manifesto in this day and age may be seen as a sign of great arrogance. However, when nerds making music for other nerds is the par of the course and detachment from, even ignorance of, a whole spectrum of music and other arts is seen as a virtue, it is fair to say that arrogance becomes a positive, necessary force of change.

Kyoto Republic does not stand for the labelling of ultimately formalistic music as "experimental" simply because it might differ from the most obvious pop formulas by means of "quirky sounds" or "erratic beats". Kyoto Republic does not stand for considering any scene as a singularity, a self-sustaining musical universe in and of itself.

Kyoto Republic stands for creativity. Free exchange of ideas and immersion in influences feeds creativity; separationism strangles it. All the "radical" ideas of your "experimental" music have been nurtured for over a century now, over a period that reaches vastly beyond your home computers, your Internet and your "online revolutions".

We aim for our words, our works, to have RELEVANCE. When we call something we release "bizarre", you will not expect a few humorous bleeps every now and then; you will know you are in for a warped treat as twisted and oneiric as any surrealist masterpiece. If we release something that is "experimental", you will know better than to expect formalistic IDM.

All of a Sudden I Am Full of Scars is a trip into dark downtempo, triphop and dubstep which beautifully sparks glimmer of hope here and there - only to collapse into the depths... Music for the armchair travellers of the darkening nights.

[KR007] Trailing Space - Like Saturn Devours His Children

Like Saturn Devours His Children is a successor to previous Trailing Space album, Bring The Darkness Over This Place (2006). On this album guitars give even more space for the piano and strings, but also for more electronic expression, creating an inspiring mixture of post-rock, ambient and film music.

Music on this album have been used for a theatrical performance and will be featured also in the next feature-length film by Karahka Tuotanto. The album cover is a detail from Saturn by Goya from the Black Paintings series.

[KR006] chda - Sykli

We are proud to release yet another quality album! Chda offers us over one hour of downtempo with dark and cold atmospheres. It is easy to go wrong with this kind of music, but chda manages to keep the level of style and quality high thru this laidback dub/triphop/idm/jazz influenced release. Let it be slowly growling dub in low register or almost danceable semi-breakbeat, chda keeps the productive values high.

[KR005] Jean Nine - Black Folders And Voodoo Archives

It's time for a more rhythmical release from the Republic of Kyoto! Jean Nine presents a full serving of IDM on his new album "Black Folders And Voodoo Archives", a more dance oriented predecessor for his "Music Is a Wounded Animal" (2002). Drilling broken electro and drum'n'bass beats face the pumping basslines, epileptic ADHD grooves and mellow melodies. Among the new tracks some pieces are lost and found treasures from the deepest dungeons of Jean's backup medium and some of the tracks have been semi-released, but now finally released officially as remastered versions.
